Beer Glasses FAQs

Beer glass shapes may seem like a purely aesthetical thing, but this isn’t the case at all! Beer glasses take lots of different shapes because they’re made with specific beers in mind. The shape of the glass can affect the aroma, flavour and even the carbonation of the beer, as well as the drinking experience. If you want to serve the best pints possible, this is the kind of know-how that can take your options to the next level.

Here are a few common beer glass shapes and their most common uses:

Conical beer glasses: Your classic pint glasses are designed for easy, casual drinking of things like lagers and session beers.

Tulip beer glasses: The bulbous shape of a tulip glass is perfect for hop-forward beers with strong flavours, as the smaller opening helps to concentrate aromas. They’re great for IPAs and sour beers.

Tankard beer glasses: Tankards and beer mugs have thick walls to keep your beer colder for longer, and are generally used for ales and ciders.

This is just the tip of the iceberg - choosing the right glass for your beer is a science if you want it to be.

If you want to level up your customer experience by serving beers in frosty chilled glasses, popping your glasses into the fridge for half an hour is enough to see an effect, although you could keep them in there longer if you wish.

You can take lessons on pouring the perfect pint, but essentially it boils down to these three steps:

  • Hold your glass at a 45-degree angle

  • Pour the beer down the side of the glass to stop it becoming too foamy

  • Once you’ve poured about half, straighten the glass to produce the perfect foamy head.

Pouring beer into a glass is easier with our activator glasses - you can find them above the products above.

You could use a dishwasher - or specifically a glasswasher - to clean your beer glasses, but the cleaning products you use are important. Using regular dish soap or dishwasher detergent can leave a residue on the beer glasses that will affect the taste of your drinks later.

If you have the time to handwash your dishes, scrub them with a low-suds detergent and a bottle brush, sanitise them, and leave them to air dry.
